Teens React to War in Iraq, Their Own Futures in New Survey to be Released August 5

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans will release the 2003 State of Our Nation's Youth report on Tuesday, August 5 from the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. This annual report is created from a comprehensive survey of teens from around the country to determine the issues that affect them and their thoughts and feelings on the issues affecting the nation. This year's report includes:

-- Young people's feelings about the War in Iraq

-- Who has the greatest impact on the lives of young people

-- The major pressure in the lives of teens today -- grades, looks, money, sex

-- Students rate the curriculum areas of their schools - Math, History, the Arts

-- How this generation defines success

This marks the seventh consecutive year the Association has issued the report. "Each year the State of Our Nation's Youth report allows us important and valuable insight into how the young people of America view our country and the world," remarked Horatio Alger President and CEO Walter Scott, Jr. The survey was conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates on behalf of the Horatio Alger Association.

The press conference will be held at 11 a.m. ET in the First Amendment room of the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Peter D. Hart of Peter D. Hart Research Associates will present the results and analysis of the survey with a panel of young people from around the country. The student panelists are:

-- Dylan Shay of Carlsbad, Calif.

-- Zaneta Tutuh of Alexandria, Va.

-- Nathan Prather of Villa Rica, Ga.

-- Pedro Espinoza of Mount Vernon, Wash.

-- Charles Marshall of Millsboro, Del.

-- Anya Edun of Pembroke Pines, Fla.

The State of Our Nation's Youth report is a timely and dynamic study of how America's young people feel about the world around them and their place in it.
