From: Horatio Alger Association, 301-392-6053 WASHINGTON, April 24 -- Eighty-nine high school seniors from Broward, Martin and St. Lucie counties have been named as Horatio Alger Florida Scholars and will each receive a $2,500 college scholarship. These students provide an inspiring example of Florida's youth, having already demonstrated a desire to accomplish their goals, even in the face of adversity. The Horatio Alger Florida Scholars Program is proud to recognize the hard work of these outstanding young people. The 2003 Horatio Alger Florida Scholars have utilized initiative, perseverance and hard work to overcome the adversity they have faced in their lives. This accomplished group of young people have all demonstrated success in academics, co-curricular activities and community service while taking on some of life's most difficult challenges. Each of these young people possess the aspirations and potential to make important contributions in Florida and around the world. "These students have come so far already. We are pleased to honor their accomplishments and help to make a college education more accessible and affordable", states H. Wayne Huizenga, Chairman of the Horatio Alger Association and Chairman of Huizenga Holdings, Inc. In addition to the $2,500 scholarship each student receives educational and financial counseling from the Horatio Alger Association. Mr. Huizenga remarks, "The experience of the Horatio Alger Association is unparalleled in working with students of limited financial means and who've overcome obstacles in obtaining a college education." This scholarship may be used to attend any college or university within the United States. The Horatio Alger Florida Scholars Program is funded through the generosity of H.Wayne and Marti Huizenga. Mr. & Mrs. Huizenga have a great dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of young people throughout Florida and the United States though their philanthropic gifts.
