News Advisory:

In an effort to provide some context for the growing debate about the potential impact of single-sex marriages on employers, The Employee Benefit Research Institute is issuing a fact sheet that includes background, legal issues, and employers' considerations about domestic partner benefits for workers.

The full fact sheet is posted on the EBRI Web site at http://www.ebri.org

The fact sheet reports that about 19 percent of surveyed firms offered domestic partner benefits in 2002 and that most workers who elect domestic partner benefits are unmarried heterosexual couples.

EBRI is a private, nonprofit public policy research organization based in Washington, DC. Founded in 1978, EBRI does not lobby and does not take positions on legislative proposals.
