News Advisory: WHAT: Kiplinger Seminar Series: "Covering Terrorism at Home" -- A free all-day seminar for journalists WHEN: Monday, March 15, 8:30 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. WHERE: Santa Monica, Calif. WHO: National Press Foundation in collaboration with The RAND Corporation Terrorism is the biggest news and most serious threat in America since the Cold War, but translating it into local news is a frustrating challenge. That's why the RAND Corporation, the nation's original "think tank" and the recognized expert on fighting terrorism, is joining the National Press Foundation for a special one-day seminar on covering terrorism -- from a West Coast perspective. There is no cost, but reservations are required. The program is designed with plenty of time for questions and answers and everything is on-the-record. A maximum of 25 journalists will be admitted. To attend, you must be employed as a print, broadcast or online journalist, or be an active freelancer. Journalists must provide for their own travel. Reservation deadline is 5 p.m. (2 p.m. Pacific) March 11. The seminar will begin sharply at 8:30 a.m. at RAND Corp. headquarters, 1700 Main Street, Santa Monica, with a continental breakfast. A light lunch will also be served. Sessions include: -- Fighting Terrorists in America -- Brian Jenkins, founder, RAND's terrorism research program. -- Protecting Our Borders -- Jack Riley, director of RAND Homeland Security Center. -- Problems Facing Emergency Responders -- Lois Davis, RAND analyst. -- Is California Ready for a Biological Attack? -- Jeffrey Wasserman, RAND analyst. -- Helping People Protect Themselves in a Chemical, Biological or Radiological Attack -- Lynn Davis, RAND senior political scientist.
