COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 28 -- Focus on the Family Senior Policy Analyst for Bioethics Carrie Gordon Earll issued the following statement today regarding criticism of the Bush administration's funding policy for embryonic stem-cell research:

"Today, well-intentioned but misinformed members of Congress released an open letter to President Bush calling on the administration to expand federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research. However, focusing on embryonic stem cell research funding limitations reveals a lack of understanding regarding the status of stem-cell research.

"The best financial investment our government can make in stem-cell research centers on non-embryonic sources. Therapies using stem cells from sources like bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, and the pancreas have already successfully treated patients with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and multiple sclerosis.

"Sadly, some members of Congress are operating under a misconception regarding the source of these cells. Human embryonic stem cells are only harvested from one source: human embryos, which are destroyed in the process - an unethical and unnecessary act.

"Focus on the Family encourages the Bush administration to retain its current policy regarding funding for embryonic stem cell research and at the same time explore avenues for increasing federal funding for non-embryonic stem-cell therapy development, which will continue to ensure benefits for patients and taxpayers alike."
