From: David Gasak of Focus on the Family, 719-548-4570 or 719-964-6834 (cell) or culturalissues@family.org COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Jan. 30 -- On Feb. 7, Focus on the Family is scheduled to begin its 25th national Love Won Out conference on homosexuality with an unprecedented welcome. Nashville Metro Councilwoman at Large Carolyn Baldwin Tucker will read a proclamation at Two Rivers Baptist Church, officially welcoming the conference, and its message of hope, to Nashville. "We hear a lot about 'tolerance' when we bring this conference to a city, but what Councilwoman Tucker is doing is showing what true tolerance is," said Mike Haley, manager of Focus on the Family's gender issues department and the conference host. "We always welcome gays and lesbians -- even those who don't agree with us -- to our events, but this is the first time a city has gone so far as to formally welcome us, and we couldn't be more appreciative of that." He added that the conference will address misconceptions about homosexuality as well as an understanding of how local churches can offer an appropriate, compassionate response to the homosexual community. "We encourage the public to come to our conference with open minds and hear the real stories behind this controversial topic," Haley said. Conference speakers include experts in the field of homosexuality and gender identity, such as Joseph Nicolosi, Ph.D., president of the National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality. Dr. Nicolosi has just written A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality and has appeared on the Fox's News Channel's O'Reilly Factor. Other speakers include Dick Carpenter, Ph.D., a veteran teacher, principal and college professor; and Jane Boyer, a nurse practitioner and former lesbian. Since its inception in 1998, Focus on the Family's Love Won Out conference has shared its message with more than 20,000 people in 24 cities and has experienced nearly a 25 percent increase in attendance over the past year.
