
Emergency Nurses Association Names David Westman as New Executive Director 7/8/2004

Westman will assume the position of ENA executive director, effective August 16, 2004. Westman succeeds Cheryl A. Smart, who has served as the ENA's interim executive director since November 2003. Westman brings more than 10 years of experience as a senior executive working with not-for-profit medical associations, societies, and other organizations. Most recently, he served as managing director for Strategy & Human Capital and Not-for-Profit Consulting at RSM McGladrey, Inc., Schaumburg, Ill, where he specialized in board of director effectiveness, benchmarking, business strategy development, compensation program development, and general human resources management. Prior to this position, Westman was a consultant with KPMG in Chicago, where he was responsible for managing and marketing a variety of consulting engagements. "David brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the ENA and a valuable understanding of the association world," said Mary Ellen (Mel) Wilson, RN, 2004 ENA president. "His guidance will be important as the ENA continues to address key clinical and strategic issues facing emergency nurses and emergency departments overall." "I'm extremely honored and excited to be joining the ENA and having the opportunity to interact with professionals who represent a crucial piece of our health care system - emergency nursing," said Westman. "I look forward to working closely with the ENA's board, members, and staff to lead the association in its next phase of growth by addressing important issues facing emergency department nurses, such as the nation's nursing shortage and emergency department overcrowding." Westman is the author of numerous articles on performance improvement, including a recent feature, "Understanding Current and Best Practices in Association Governance," which appeared in the January/February issue of Forum, the official publication of the Association Forum of Chicagoland. He is also a frequent speaker at association and society meetings. Westman holds a bachelor of arts degree from Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill, and a master's of business administration from the University of Chicago.
