From: HHS Press Office, 202-690-6343 Web site: http://www.hhs.gov/news/ WASHINGTON, March 28 -- The following is a statement by HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson regarding Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., receiving the Albany Medical Center Award: I want to congratulate Dr. Fauci, who has been chosen to receive the prestigious Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research. Dr. Fauci is one of the greatest minds conducting medical research anywhere in the world, and we are privileged to have him serve as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). During more than three decades of research at NIH, Dr. Fauci has worked to develop effective therapies for people with a wide range of infectious diseases. He has made substantial contributions in understanding how HIV affects the immune system and into effective treatments and potential AIDS vaccines. He also continues to play a central role in our nation's bioterrorism preparedness efforts by leading essential research in this area. Through his research and leadership, Dr. Fauci has already accomplished so much to improve the lives of Americans and others around the world, but I know his work is far from complete. I look forward to seeing what else his research will teach us about the world of medicine and science. He is a valued scientist, advisor and friend, and I couldn't be more pleased that the Albany Medical Center has chosen to recognize him. |
