Broad Center for Superintendents Hosts Training Academy in Minneapolis; Top Military Brass, Biotech CEO Answer Call 3/6/2003
From: Melissa Bonney Ratcliff of the Broad Foundation, 310-954-5057; e-mail: mbr@broadfoundation.org News Advisory: The Broad Center for Superintendents will conduct a training program for the Urban Superintendents Academy at the Minneapolis Embassy Suites Airport Hotel on Friday, March 7 through Sunday, March 9. (Complete schedule listed below) The Broad Center for Superintendents is an executive leadership development program designed to develop the critical skills needed to become a successful urban superintendent. Its initial focus is a training academy that prepares future superintendents to meet the unique challenges that urban public school districts face. The Center is a joint effort between The Broad Foundation and former Michigan Governor John Engler. Eli Broad, Founder of The Broad Foundation, said, "More and more school districts across America that are making significant gains in student achievement are run by non-traditional superintendents. The Broad Center for Superintendents is cultivating this talent and training these leaders -- many of whom are already at the top of their field in business, the military and education. The next generation of urban school district CEOs looks brighter because of the commitment of these talented individuals." Speakers at the academy will include: -- Mr. Anthony Alvarado, Chancellor of Instruction, San Diego City Unified School District -- Mr. Mark Atkinson, Chairman and CEO, Teachscape -- Dr. Richard Elmore, Professor of Educational Leadership, Harvard Graduate School of Education Fewer than 15 percent of applicants were selected to participate in this innovative training academy for public school leaders. The 2003 class includes 20 leaders from both inside and outside the education sector. Eleven currently serve in public school districts across the country. Two are senior military officers, three are executives from charter/education management and education technology organizations, two are state government leaders, two are founder-owners of financial services firms and one is a former professional football player. (A complete list is attached). The Broad Foundation deliberately recruited talented business, non-profit and government executives - along with traditional education leaders - to participate in this program so that the best and the brightest could dedicate their skills to solving the challenges our nation's public schools face. Participants in the academy will not need to leave their current jobs immediately. They will attend seven extended weekend training sessions over a ten-month period in locations across the country. Fellowships, including tuition, travel and all program-related expenses, will be fully covered by The Broad Center. At the end of the training, The Broad Center will help place participants in urban school districts as superintendents and senior executives. Superintendents are in charge of our nation's greatest investment - our children. However, many have little training or background in complex financial, labor, management, personnel and capital resource decision-making. In fact, 98 percent of superintendents are trained as teachers - not managers. Additionally, the average urban superintendent's tenure is just over four years. This program will dramatically change this equation. The academy curriculum will include the following sessions: -- The CEO: Effective organizational leadership in education -- Student achievement and reinventing schools for success -- The politics of urban school system leadership -- Using management and instructional data for decision making -- The governance-management team -- Planning and leading systems change -- Public and community relations -- Securing a job as an urban superintendent The Urban Superintendents Academy was launched last year. Twenty-three accomplished professionals completed the program in November 2002 and became the first class of Broad Center Fellows. The Academy expects Fellows to move into CEO or other senior executive positions in urban school systems between 18-30 months after graduation. The first group of Fellows is already outpacing the program's goal. Upon graduation, fully one-third of the Academy's pioneer class had already taken their next career steps. Two Broad Fellows have been appointed as superintendents in large, urban districts. An additional six members of the class - including three "non-traditional" Fellows with significant experience outside of education - have been selected as superintendents in smaller districts or have been promoted or hired into senior executive roles in large urban systems. --- The Broad Foundation's mission is to dramatically improve K-12 urban public education through better governance, management and labor relations. The Foundation's other major initiatives include the one million dollar Broad Prize for Urban Education, awarded each year to urban school districts that have made the greatest overall improvement in student achievement and The Broad Institute for School Boards, an annual training program for newly elected school board members that is designed to increase student achievement through improved governance. --- The Broad Center for Superintendents Embassy Suites -- Minneapolis Airport 7901 34th Avenue South, Bloomington, MN 55425 -- Friday, March 7, 2003 Time: 8:15am - 10:00am Speaker: Anthony Alvarado Title: Chancellor of Instruction, San Diego City Unified School District Subject: Theory of Action -- What it means to say that instruction drives a system.
