Conference Call, Report: The Jobs Dilemma; Why the Bush Administration's Job Forecasts Are Off-Target 2/11/2004
From: Nancy Coleman or Stephaan Harris, 202-775-8810, both of the Economic Policy Institute; Henry Griggs of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 202-408-1080 News Advisory: The Bush administration's track record on creating jobs has been disappointing, but that has not stopped it from issuing highly improbable forecasts of job growth in the past and again this week for the coming year, according to analysts at the Economic Policy Institute and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. On Thursday, Feb. 12, the two groups will host a conference call and issue a paper challenging the latest new projections from the president's Council of Economic Advisers, documenting why those claims are not credible in the current economy, and criticizing the administration's three-year pattern of predicting robust job growth that has not materialized. The authors will participate in a national media conference call to discuss their analysis and answer questions. The authors include: -- Jared Bernstein, senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute -- Isaac Shapiro, senior fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities -- Lee Price, research director at the Economic Policy Institute WHAT: Conference call on report analyzing new job projections from the president's Council of Economic Advisers WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 12, 11 a.m. (EST) RSVP: To receive the toll-free line and access code for the conference call, contact the Communications Department of EPI at 202-775-8810, or the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities at 202-408-1080. ------ The Economic Policy Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan economic think tank founded in 1986.
