From: Tom Foulkes or Katharine Kim, 202-331-5944, both of the National Restaurant Association E-mail: media@dineout.org WASHINGTON, June 11 -- According to the National Restaurant Association's Holiday Dining-2000 survey, 23 percent of Americans choose to celebrate Father's Day by dining in one of the country's 858,000 restaurant-and-foodservice outlets-an increase of six percentage points from 1996. Father's Day is the fourth most popular holiday or occasion to dine out, following birthdays (55 percent), Mother's Day (38 percent) and Valentine's Day (32 percent). This year, Father's Day falls on Sunday, June 16th. According to the survey, larger households consisting of three or more individuals were more likely to dine out on Father's Day than smaller households. Twenty-seven percent of adults in households with three or more individuals reported eating out on Father's Day. "Our research shows that treating Dad to a meal at a local restaurant on Father's Day is gaining popularity," said Association President and Chief Executive Officer Steven C. Anderson. "The nation's restaurants look forward to serving the growing number of Americans who choose dining out as a way to celebrate Father's Day."
