
American College of Nurse-Midwives to Hold Annual Meeting and Exhibit 5/20/2003

WHEN: May 30 - June 5, 2003 WHERE: JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort, Palm Desert, CA More than 1,500 nurse-midwives, physicians, nurses, and other women's health care professionals from the U.S., Canada, and 15 countries will attend ACNM's seven-day meeting, which features sessions on 40 topics, each of particular interest to health, medical and science reporters. During the conference, attendees will meet and share cutting-edge ideas, network and get the latest trends and women's health challenges from expert speakers in 85 workshops, panel sessions, and symposia. This year's program features such presenters as: -- Judy Norsigian, of the groundbreaking, Our Bodies Ourselves, will deliver the opening ceremony address and present a session chronicling 30 years of advocacy for women's health. -- Dr. Thomas Strong, director of Phoenix Perinatal Associates, will discuss America's historically poor pregnancy statistics. -- Penny Simkin, doula pioneer, childbirth educator with more than 30 years of experience and author of Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn: A Complete Guide will share her insight into working with women and epidurals Other notable sessions will address: Hormone Replacement Therapy, Depression in Women, the Professional Liability Crisis, and New Treatments for PMS. In conjunction with the conference, ACNM will conduct its "Blankets for Babies" program in which new blankets will be donated to area women's health service organizations. The 100-booth exposition is a showcase of women's health care products and services. Vendors from pharmaceutical companies, equipment manufacturers, publishers, childbirth educators, education programs, and government agencies are just some of the exhibitors. All members of the working media may attend. Media will have the opportunity to meet with experts and speakers to discuss first-hand issues such as the rising cesarean rate, domestic violence against pregnant women, the impact of the nationwide nursing shortage, and the latest developments and research in the health care of women and newborns.
