WASHINGTON, July 9 -- The following statement was released today by American Life League:

"Though we are not surprised by the President's recent decision to fund stem cell research on preborn children killed by abortion, we are definitely outraged," said Judie Brown of American Life League. "The Bush administration continues to prove that the value they place on innocent human life is exactly 'zero'."

In late May of this year, President George W. Bush quietly approved a decision made by members of his administration to endow federal money to a project at Johns Hopkins University involving research on aborted human fetuses up to eight weeks old, despite his "pro-life" campaign promise to oppose such research. In response to a U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops pre-election questionnaire, President Bush stated, "I oppose using federal funds to perform fetal tissue research from induced abortions."

"Of course, it shouldn't surprise us that a man willing to fund macabre research on children killed in abortions finds nothing wrong with breaking promises to voters or even to Catholic bishops," said Brown. "It has long been evident that President Bush is not pro-life. Now we see even more clearly that not only is he 'not pro-life,' he is an all-too-willing accomplice in grisly human experiments for the sake of Mengelean medicine."

Two months ago American Life League condemned the appointment of Dr. Elias Zerhouni as director of the National Institutes of Health, as his position there creates a clear conflict of interest with regard to his position at John Hopkins University. As a founder of the Institute for Cell Engineering at John's Hopkins, Zerhouni advanced embryonic stem cell research. Now as director of NIH, he is sending public funds straight to his own nefarious projects on innocent human persons.

Judie Brown and American Life League are calling upon all pro-lifers to actively express their indignation over the Bush administration's legacy of bad decisions, broken promises and dead babies. We encourage you to write letters to the editors of your local papers and call the White House at 202-456-1414, or send e-mail to president@whitehouse.gov.
