From: Eric Langone of the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers' Association, 508-759-1041, ext. 12 Email: elangone@cranberries.org News Advisory: WHO: The Cape Cod Cranberry Growers' Association (CCCGA), representing 450 cranberry growers in Massachusetts, announced today that Governor Jane Swift has proclaimed October as Massachusetts Cranberry Month in recognition of the health benefits and culinary appeal of cranberries, available fresh to consumers right now. WHAT: CCCGA invites you to attend a presentation to the media on October 3 at the Pinehills Country Club in Plymouth, Mass, followed by a brief trip to the cranberry bogs. Attendees will learn more about cranberries' health benefits from Dr. Catherine Neto of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and their appeal in the culinary world from Chef Aaron DeRego of the Back Eddy Restaurant. WHY: Recent research points to the cranberry's role as a potent source of anti-oxidants, to protect against heart disease and cancer as well as properties that block infection-causing bacteria in the urinary tract. Emerging research suggests that this bacteria-blocking power could also be effective against the bacteria that cause certain ulcers and periodontal disease. Cranberries also benefit the state's economy and environment. The crop contributes more than $200 million in payroll to Massachusetts' workers and employs about 5,500 people. Cranberry growers support each planted acre of cranberries with an average of three to four acres of surrounding wetlands and uplands, for a total of 61,000 acres of wetlands and uplands. WHEN: The event will take place at 9 a.m. on Oct. 3 WHERE: The Pinehills Country Club, in the Clubhouse Banquet Room. Pinehills is located at 54 Clubhouse Drive, Plymouth, MA 02360. RSVP: Please RSVP if planning to attend by Sept. 27.
