More than 7,300 attendees will make their voices heard on Capitol Hill during the 2002 Realtors Midyear Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo, with particular attention to NAR's efforts to stop big banks from entering the real estate brokerage and property management businesses. Key congressional leaders and federal agency representatives will address real estate legislative and regulatory issues during a number of forums. Other sessions include the latest in real estate technology, buying and selling trends, and economic predictions for both the residential and commercial sectors of the market. Also, nationally recognized speakers will lead education sessions in business and leadership. At this year's Trade Expo, more than 150 vendors will showcase the latest in products and services in more than 300 booths. Paul Gillmor, R-Ohio; EPA Assistant Administrator Marianne Lamont Horinko; Susan Wachter, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; and Ann Schnare, Mortgage Insurance Companies of America Gillmor will be honored for his efforts on brownfields legislation; Horinko will discuss brownfields; Wachter and Schnare will discuss Ginnie Mae CHOICE legislation, regulatory implementation of the new brownfields law and pending legislation that impacts the secondary mortgage market 1 - 3 p.m. Marriott Wardman Park, Marriott Ballroom Salon III Equal Opportunity-Cultural Diversity Forum Speakers -- George McCarthy, Ford Foundation; James Carr, Fannie Mae Foundation The speakers will discuss "Predatory Lending and Real Estate," in which they will share their perspectives regarding the benefits of real estate finance education. 2 - 4 p.m. Marriott Wardman Park, South Cotillion Room Land Use, Property Rights and Environment Forum Speakers -- Elissa Feldman, Environmental Protection Agency; Peter Yost, Building Science Corp.; Ken Warden, Realtor, chairman, NAR's Mold Working Group. The speakers will discuss toxic mold in relation to land use, property rights, and the environment. 4:30 - 6 p.m. Marriott Wardman Park, Marriott Ballroom Salon I & II Member & Director Forum Speaker -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y. The forum provides an overview of the most important issues confronting the association. Wednesday, May 15 7 - 8 a.m. Marriott Wardman Park, Marriott Ballroom Salon I Congressional Briefing Speakers -- Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Calif.; Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Pa. Provides Realtors with a synopsis of priority issues that NAR is recommending members discuss with their respective members of Congress in preparation for visits to Capitol Hill. Thursday, May 16 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Marriott Wardman Park, Marriott Ballroom Salon I Public Policy Political Forum -- Part 1 Speakers -- Norman Ornstein, American Enterprise Institute; Thomas Mann, Brookings Institution Ornstein and Mann will comment on Congress and the upcoming elections Part 2 Speaker -- Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J. Sen. Corzine will address pending legislative housing issues. Part 3 -- "Perspectives on Affordable Housing: What Are the Challenges and Practical Solutions" Speakers -- Robert Reid, National Housing Conference (moderator); John McIlwain, Urban Land Institute; Chris McElroy, Realtor, The Group Inc.; Susan Reid, Virginia Housing Development Authority. The panel will discuss housing opportunities, with special emphasis on the future of low-cost housing programs after September 11. 8 - 10 a.m. Marriott Wardman Park, Marriott Ballroom Salon II Residential Forum David Lereah, NAR's chief economist, will lead a group of economists in reviewing current mortgage and housing market trends and forecasts. In a second part of the program, a panel of experts will discuss the new MLS tool, Internet Data Exchange (IDX), and how MLS providers and Realtors( are adapting to the new world of data exchange. Noon - 3 p.m. Omni Shoreham, Empire Room Commercial Forum Speaker -- Susan Hudson-Wilson, chief executive officer, Property and Portfolio Research LLC The Economic Issues & Business Trends/Commercial Forum and the Commercial Networking Roundtables have joined to present a single multi-part program for commercial practitioners. Hudson-Wilson will discuss the latest trends in commercial real estate and forecast where it is headed in the future. During the roundtable and networking portion of the program, commercial practitioners will share ideas about current issues and business strategies. 1 -3 p.m. Marriott Wardman Park, Wilson A & B International Forum Speakers -- Richard A. Gump, Law Offices of Richard A. Gump Jr. PC, Dallas; and David L. Miller, Shaw Pittman LLP, McLean, Va. Texas-based attorney Gump will review immigration issues and options for foreign nationals investing in U.S. real estate. Washington, D.C.-based attorney Miller will discuss flight capital, laws for foreign investors and tax issues connected with international real property investing. Friday, May 17 8 - 10 a.m. Marriott Wardman Park, Marriott Ballroom Salon III Marketing Forum: Hot Technology Meets Cool Customer Service Speakers -- John Tuccillo, JAT Inc.; Aubrey Jackson, Mark Lesswing, The Center for Realtor Technology. Tuccillo, author of "New Business Models for the New Economy," teaches how successful real estate practitioners are changing business models, and using the latest technology and customer service techniques to accommodate the rules of the new economy. Jackson and Lesswing will give previews new technology to help Realtors enhance their productivity. 1 - 3 p.m. Omni Shoreham, Regency Ballroom Business Technology Forum Speakers -- Greg Burge, Steve Outslay, Jim York, Supra Products, Salem, Ore.; Mark Lesswing, The Center for Realtor Technology; Bruce Benham, Re/Max International Inc., Greenwood Village, Colo.; W. Michael Long, Steven Ozonian, Homestore.com; Laurie Janik, general counsel, National Association of Realtors. Representatives of Supra Products will discuss the latest technology strategies in real estate. Lesswing will demonstrate the latest in convergent wireless technology, the devices that combine mobile computing and phone technology into one device.
