
William E. Garrett Jr., MD, PhD, Named President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine 7/31/2003

Garrett, Jr., MD, PhD, became President of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) in a ceremony at the Society's 2003 Annual Meeting in San Diego, Calif. (July 21 - 24). Dr. Garrett joined the AOSSM Board of Directors as vice president in 2001 and served as president-elect last year; his term as president will expire in July 2004. A native of North Carolina, Dr. Garrett earned both his PhD in Molecular Biology-Anatomy and his medical degree, and completed his internship, General Surgery Residency, and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Duke University. He is currently serving as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He will be returning to Duke University as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in September. In addition to his work in academia, Dr. Garrett actively practices orthopaedic sports medicine, with a special interest in knee and shoulder arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures. He provides general care of athletic teams at scholastic, collegiate, and professional levels, and has served as Medical Director for the U.S. Soccer Federation for more than a decade. His work has been recognized through many professional awards, including the AOSSM Excellence in Research Award and Award of Merit, and the Jack Hughston Award for the Best Paper in 1996 in The American Journal of Sports Medicine. He has received Excellence in Teaching awards from both Duke University Medical Center and the University of North Carolina Department of Orthopaedics. Dr. Garrett has held leadership roles within several professional societies and organizations. In addition to serving on the AOSSM Board of Directors, he has also chaired the Society's Program Committee and Site Selection Committee. He serves as director of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS) and has chaired its Research Committee. He recently was the chair of the Membership Committee of the American Orthopaedic Association. In addition, he has actively participated in committees of AOSSM, ABOS, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the AOA, and the American College of Sports Medicine, among others. He has been a member of AOSSM since 1984. The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine is a national medical specialty association of allied health professionals and physicians, primarily orthopaedic surgeons, who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to sports medicine. AOSSM promotes and supports education and research programs in sports medicine, including those concerned with physical fitness, as well as programs designed to advance knowledge in the recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of athletic injuries. |
