ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Oct. 25 -- The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) brings "Emerging Trends -- Hot Topics in Cosmetic Surgery," a course presenting and assessing new and innovative technology and techniques in cosmetic surgery, to the ASPS/PSEF/ASMS 71st Annual Scientific Meeting, November 2-6 in San Antonio.

"This course offers a forum for plastic surgeons to discuss emerging scientific therapies and their viability in the future of patient care," reports Brian Kinney, MD, Los Angeles, ASPS program co-chair. "Participants will be brought up-to-date on innovations still being studied, tested or waiting for approval. Many topics presented at past 'Emerging Trends' courses are now mainstream techniques used in plastic surgeons offices, including Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction and the combined use of chemical peels with microdermabrasion. Other technologies presented at this course are not incorporated into clinical practice after testing reveals an inadequate product or therapy."

"Emerging Trends -- Hot Topics in Cosmetic Surgery" will be held Saturday, November 2 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter Hotel. The course is open to registered journalists.

Topics of discussion will include: -- Controversies in Female Hormone Replacement -- Alternatives to Botulinum Toxin Type A -- The Effect of Time Released Drugs on Breast Implants -- Power Assisted Liposuction -- Fibrin Glues and Tissue Sealants - Adhesives used in wound closure -- Soft Tissue Fillers - Restylane, the facial filler to erase wrinkles -- Gluteal (Buttock) Implants -- Caloric Restrictions in Anti-Aging -- 3-D Imaging in Plastic Surgery

After each topic is presented an expert provides additional, often contrasting, perspective on the emerging technologies. In addition to scheduled topics, the forum allows introduction of late-breaking updates that have occurred after the main program has been finalized.

ASPS, founded in 1931, is the largest plastic surgery organization in the world and the foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
