
National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) Announces New Chairman 10/28/2003

Mica, as chair. A former U.S. congressman from his home state of Florida, Mica has served as a member of the NOF Board of Trustees since 2000. Mica's election took place following the decision by the former chair, the Hon. Paul G. Rogers, to resign from his role. NOF was founded in 1984 and Rogers has served as the first NOF Chair since June 1985. Rogers will continue to serve as a member of the NOF Board of Trustees. "I have great respect for Paul Roger's significant contribution to NOF and to the issue of osteoporosis," stated Mica. "His leadership and commitment has helped to establish the NOF as the national charitable organization focusing on osteoporosis, a disease that touches millions of Americans. I look forward to building upon his great work as NOF strives to reduce the impact and prevalence of osteoporosis through awareness, advocacy, education and research." More than 44 million Americans, aged 50 and older, either have or are at risk for osteoporosis. NOF reports that one in two women and one in four men aged 50 and over will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. Mica serves as President & CEO of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) & Affiliates. CUNA & Affiliates is the leading trade association representing the nation's 10,000 credit unions and credit union leagues in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to CUNA, Mica's experience includes a distinguished career on Capitol Hill, having served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Select Committee on Aging and Veteran's Affairs Committee. He also worked as Deputy Whip in the House and was a member of the U.S. Secretary of State's Commission on Terrorism. Mica holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Florida Atlantic University.
