Report Examines What Makes Good Teachers; New EPI Book a Caution Light for Policies Like No Child Left Behind 8/18/2003
From: Stephaan Harris of the Economic Policy Institute, 202-775-8810 or sharris@epinet.org by News Advisory: As schools struggle to find and keep good teachers in the face of looming accountability standards, a panel of education experts will discuss which traits really make a quality teacher and contribute to student performance. A new Economic Policy Institute report, to be released Thursday, shows the impact of what traits in such as areas as teacher certification, experience, degrees, test scores have on teacher effectiveness and student achievement. The report also contradicts assumptions from such policies as No Child Left Behind, which overlooks what training contributes most to classroom success as the books research shows. Participants in the call will discuss what the research says about what contributes to teacher quality, and what the policy and classroom implications are nationally and locally in the quest for schools to produce good teachers in light of deep budget cuts and tougher standards.
