NEW YORK, April 30 -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today highlighted the importance of women owned businesses to job creation and economic growth at the Center for Women's Business Research 9th Annual Executive Roundtable. Secretary Chao was the keynote speaker at the one-day seminar.

"Women entrepreneurs are leading a quiet revolution in today's business world. More of you are starting businesses then ever before, your businesses are growing faster and, most importantly, you are leaders in creating jobs," said Chao. "The president and I are committed to ensuring that you have the tools you need to grow your business and create more jobs."

The center also recognized Secretary Chao for her career in public service with the first annual Leading by Example in the Public Sector Award. The secretary was honored for her efforts at the Department of Labor to help women and women business owners.

Secretary Chao also discussed President Bush's Jobs and Growth Plan and the impact it will have on growing the economy and creating jobs. The president's plan has three main goals: to encourage consumer spending that will continue to boost the economic recovery and create jobs; to promote investment by individuals and businesses that will lead to economic growth and job creation; and to deliver critical help to unemployed citizens. The proposal, which is pending before Congress, would speed the 2001 tax cuts to accelerate the pace of the recovery and job creation, encourage job-creating investment in America's businesses by ending the double taxation of dividends, and give small businesses incentives to grow and provide help for displaced workers to get back on the job.
