DETAILS:

The debate over how to make higher education open to students of all backgrounds has moved to center stage. In an era when a college education is more important than ever, presidential candidates are debating their plans to address spiraling tuition costs and unequal access to college. Meanwhile, in the coming months, the Administration and Congress are slated to reauthorize the federal Higher Education Act. The demand for creative ideas, grounded in solid research, is as great as ever. To address this need, The Century Foundation is publishing a collection of essays to offer fresh analysis and new solutions, America's Untapped Resource: Low-Income Students in Higher Education, edited by Century Foundation Senior Fellow Richard D. Kahlenberg. The volume includes essays on: "Low-Income Students and the Affordability of Higher Education," by Lawrence E. Gladieux; "Improving the Academic Preparation and Performance of Low-Income Students in American Higher Education," by Arthur M. Hauptman and P. Michael Timpane; "Socioeconomic Status, Race/Ethnicity, and Selective College Admissions," by Anthony P. Carnevale and Stephen J. Rose; an Appendix on "Pell Grant Recipients in Selective Colleges and Universities," by Donald E. Heller.
