Planned Parenthood of New York City to Offer Free GYN Exams; Event to Mark Free Pap Test Day 1/6/2003
From: Roger Rathman of Planned Parenthood of New York, 212-274-7283; 212-274-7276 (fax) e-mail: roger.rathman@ppnyc.org NEW YORK, Jan. 6 -- Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) will offer free GYN exams, including Pap tests, on Jan. 13, as part of a National campaign to improve women's health and promote cervical health and awareness. Cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide -- but it is also one of the most preventable and treatable. "PPNYC provides women with information and services to help them take charge of their health," said Joan Malin, CEO of PPNYC. "We hope that women take advantage of this free service, and we are proud to be part of this national effort to help women take care of themselves." In 2002, the American Cancer Society reported that between 60 and 80 percent of American women with newly diagnosed cervical cancer had not had a Pap smear in the past five years and, in fact, may have never had one. Medical research shows that cervical cancer is almost 100 percent curable, but its early detection -- through regular GYN exams and Pap tests -- is crucial. To make an appointment for a free GYN exam, including a free Pap test, call 212-965-7000. The exams are available only at PPNYC's Margaret Sanger Center in Manhattan. |
