HUMBERTO STRENGTHENS SOME MORE; NOW A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE

September 23, 2001 — At 11 p.m. EDT, the center of Hurricane Humberto was located near latitude 33.2 north, longitude 67.0 west or about 150 miles west-northwest of Bermuda. Humberto is moving toward the north near 10 mph, and a turn toward the north-northeast is expected during the next day or two, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. Reports from NOAA hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 100 mph with higher gusts. This makes Humberto a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. However, weakening is forecast to begin on Monday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 105 miles. Estimated minimum central pressure is 983 mb, 29.03 inches.

The hurricane has been near its point of closest approach to Bermuda where wind gusts to 37 mph were reported. Interests in Bermuda should monitor Humberto's progress until it moves safely away.
