BARRY MEANDERING NORTH-NORTHEASTWARD WITH LITTLE CHANGE IN STRENGTH
August 5, 2001 A tropical storm warning remains in effect from Grand Isle, La., eastward to Apalachicola, Fla., as Tropical Storm Barry continues churning in the Gulf of Mexico. At 11 p.m. EDT Saturday, the tropical storm watch was discontinued west of Grand Isle to Morgan City, La. Watches or warnings may be necessary for portions of the Florida Gulf Coast east of Apalachicola on Sunday, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. The center of Tropical Storm Barry was located near latitude 27.4 north, longitude 87.3 west or about 160 miles southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. This is also about 215 miles south-southwest of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.
Barry was drifting north-northeastward Saturday night. A northward motion at a faster forward speed is expected on Sunday. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 60 miles mainly to the south of the center.
The latest minimum central pressure reported by an Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft is 1003 Mb, 29.62 inches. Onshore winds are expected to produce coastal flooding in the warning area with water levels reaching 2 to 4 feet above normal.
