ALBERTO A LITTLE STRONGER OVER THE CENTRAL ATLANTIC OCEAN

August 7, 2000 — As of 5 a.m. EDT the center of Hurricane Alberto was located about 1,410 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Alberto is the first hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean this season. The hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30.

Alberto is moving toward the west-northwest near 15 mph, and this motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 24 hours.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 105 miles. Estimated minimum central pressure is 979 mb, 28.91 inches.
