PRESIDENT BUSH VISITS NOAA EXHIBITS
February 15, 2002 President Bush yesterday visited six NOAA exhibits during his visit to NOAA's science center in Silver Spring, Md., where he unveiled his climate initiative. Before making his remarks to a NOAA audience, Mr. Bush stopped by each exhibit booth where he was briefed on the variety of climate science conducted by NOAA. The president enjoyed a demonstration of weather forecasting capabilities of NOAA's National Weather Service. Mr. Bush was given a Web tour by Barbara McNaught-Watson, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the NWS forecast office in Sterling, Va., which covers the Washington-Baltimore region. The president particularly liked the fact Watson-McNaught showed him how to view the latest forecast of Mr. Bush's home town of Crawford, Texas.
Mr. Bush touted the benefits of NOAA Weather Radio saying that he has one on his desk at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, and appreciates the "accurate forecasts."
The president then toured the other NOAA exhibits from the Air Resources Laboratory, National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System, climate monitoring by NOAA's National Climatic Data Center, Argo floats and the 3-D visualization machine known as the ImmersaDesk.
During his remarks on climate to the NOAA audience in the science center, Mr. Bush said "it's an honor to address this topic at NOAA, whose research is providing us with the answers to critical questions about our environment."
