ARS Posts Latest Edition of Nutrition BriefsBy Judy McBride April 5, 2000The Agricultural Research Service has posted the April 2000 issue of the Food & Nutrition Research Briefs to its web site at: http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/np/fnrb/fnrb400.htm The Research Briefs is a quarterly newsletter containing the latest ARS findings in human nutrition, food freshness and safety, and new foods and varieties. Included in this issue: - Overweight people who also have high cholesterol levels would be better advised to lose the excess weight rather than turn to a heart-healthy diet.
- Whey proteins--a class of minor proteins found in milk--look promising for reducing breast cancer risk, based on early findings with rats.
- Only one-third of teens in this small survey met the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for fat and fiber intake. But their diets were highest in seven vitamins and five minerals.
