Six UC Berkeley faculty elected to prestigious National Academy of Sciences

Berkeley -- Five UC Berkeley faculty members and a visiting professor have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, part of 60 new members and 15 foreign associates from 11 countries.

Election to the academy recognizes their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. It is considered on of the highest honors that can be accorded a U.S. scientist or engineer.

With the six new members announced April 29, a total of 121 Berkeley faculty members have been elected to the academy.

The new members are:

James Allison, professor of immunology and director of the Cancer Research Laboratory.

Daniel Chemla, professor of physics and director of the materials sciences division at LLNL.

Paul Kay, professor emeritus of linguistics.

Kenneth Raymond, professor and chair of the chemistry department.

Kirk Smith, professor of public health and environmental sciences.

Grigory Barenblatt, visiting professor in mathematics.
