NASA VAN TO VISIT SANTA BARBARA SCHOOLS THIS WEEK

A van packed with astronaut suits and other accouterments of space exploration will be in Santa Barbara tomorrow, Oct. 13, through Thursday, Oct. 15. Tom Gates, an education specialist from NASA's Ames Research Center will present lecture demonstrations on rocketry, aeronautics, communication, remote sensing, and astronomy and conduct an astronomy workshop for Santa Barbara County teachers on Saturday, Oct. 17.

"We are developing programs that we hope will benefit the local school-aged population," said Chris Foster, K-14 Academic Outreach Coordinator for UCSB's College of Letters and Science. "This week's activities, particularly the workshop on Saturday, corresponds with the new state science standards for elementary school students."

Gates will visit classrooms as well as give presentations. In addition to the astronomy workshop for elementary school educators, there will be a star gazing party. All events are free except for the workshop, which has a $5 fee. For information and reservation, call 893-7970. The schedule is:
