NSF to Support Research in Advanced Housing for the Nation

The National Science Foundation (NSF) today announced a $1.5-million initiative to develop technologies that will help create a new generation of housing. NSF plans up to 12 grants for fundamental engineering research in areas that include improving the durability of building products and enhancing the efficiency of the building process and manufacture of components.

"This research could lead to future housing that meets higher standards of energy efficiency, environmental performance, and quality -- at affordable costs," said Vijaya Gopu, NSF's program manager for the initiative.

The grants will support the Partnership for Advancing Technologies in Housing (PATH), a national program announced by President Clinton last year to seek ways to build homes faster, better and less expensively.

NSF's initiative will focus a broad array of engineering sciences and technologies and interdisciplinary activities on the effort. One-half of the funding for the initiative is being provided by PATH, which is administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Eleven other federal agencies are participating in PATH, as well as the home building, product manufacturing, insurance, and financial industries.
