HHS Brings Seniors into Cyberspace

The Department of Health and Human Services today is bringing senior citizens at 462 senior centers across the country greater access to all the information about Medicare and other HHS programs on the Internet. HHS' Health Care Financing Administration is loaning more than 500 computers to these centers so seniors can tap the wealth of constantly updated Medicare and Medicaid information on its Web site at cms.hhs.gov. This access will be increasingly important, as HCFA's website soon will include easy-to-use charts so people in Medicare can compare premiums, copayments, and benefits for all the managed care plans in their area. In the future, more information on quality rankings and consumer satisfaction ratings will be added. "Bringing seniors into cyberspace is an efficient way to keep our beneficiaries up-to-date about our programs so they can make informed health care decisions," said HCFA Deputy Administrator Nancy-Ann Min DeParle. "Providing computers to senior centers helps ensure that someone with know-how will be on hand to guide those who have never surfed the Internet before." "These senior centers, many of which are supported by the Administration on Aging, provide the perfect place for older Americans to learn more about computers and the Internet," said William F. Benson, Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Aging. "This project is giving older persons access to tools they need to be as informed and empowered as possible." HCFA is loaning at least one computer to every qualified senior center that applied to be in the Computers for Seniors program. The computers should start arriving at senior centers in October. HCFA is providing personal computers and basic Windows and DOS operating software. Senior centers are responsible for installing and maintaining the equipment, as well as providing a modem and any additional phone lines.
