The AIUM celebrates 50 years at the 2005 AIUM Annual convention and preconvention
LAUREL, MD-The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) will be holding its 2005 AIUM Annual Preconvention and Convention and 50th Anniversary Celebration in Orlando, Florida, June 18–22, at the WALT DISNEY WORLD SWAN AND DOLPHIN Hotel. Whether you are new to the field of ultrasound or a seasoned professional, there's sure to be plenty of educational activities that cater to all levels of expertise.
Meet-the-Professor sessions, film panel sessions, and an exhibit hall filled with the latest ultrasound technology are just some of the educational offerings that will be available to participants. Convention attendees are eligible to earn up to 17 CME credits, and those attending the Meet-the-Professor sessions are eligible to earn up to 7 credits. An additional 11 CME credits are available, if you arrive at the convention early and attend courses at the Preconvention Program, June 18–19. There, you can design your own program by choosing 1 or 2 of the following continuing education options:
Diagnostic Ultrasound Principles and Instruments: Fundamentals and Advances – This course addresses how modern ultrasound imaging and Doppler ultrasound work, including the fundamentals and technological advances. The objectives are to provide an introduction for those new to the field; an update on technological advances for practicing physicians, sonographers, and other health care professionals; and assistance for those preparing for certification examinations.
Challenging Diagnoses in Obstetrics and Gynecology – This interactive multimedia course covers differential diagnoses of anatomic and congenital anomalies. Twelve difficult cases from leading experts in the field will be presented to the audience through images and video clips of each case, along with a set of questions for the audience to answer. After attendees have expressed their opinions, the experts will discuss each case. The objective of the course is to present the audience with challenging problems in obstetric sonography as well as guidance on how to solve them.
Breast Ultrasound Imaging: Coming-of-Age – This course covers current applications of breast ultrasound imaging as well as those just on the horizon, including screening; the new BIRADS (the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) for breast ultrasound interpretation; ultrasound-guided interventional procedures; and technical developments.
The Thyroid and Parathyroid: Imaging and Intervention – This course includes a review of the sonographic and other criteria for thyroid nodule biopsy as well as a discussion of which nodules should be biopsied and which should be followed or ignored; thyroid biopsy techniques, including the needle-type aspiration technique; the role of core biopsy and slide preparation; the role of ultrasound in assessing the postthyroidectomy patient, including the imaging and biopsy of lesions in the thyroid bed and lymph nodes; ultrasound's role in evaluating patients with hyperparathyroidism; how practitioners can increase their chances of successfully detecting enlarged parathyroid glands; and how ultrasound compares with radionuclide imaging.
Advanced Fetal Echocardiography – The purpose of this course is to help attendees understand the basic examination of the fetal heart with 2- and 3-dimensional sonography; recognize normal and abnormal fetal cardiac anatomy; and diagnose and manage complex cardiac rhythm disturbances in the fetus.
