Regional AAAS meeting to be held at The University of Arizona April 13 through 16
The regional meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science will be held April 13 through 16 at The University of Arizona, Student Union Memorial Center.
Scientists, teachers and students from around the region will present their work in oral presentations and poster sessions at the 80th annual Southwestern and Rocky Mountain regional meeting (SWARM).

The symposium, "Anasazi, Drought, Volcanoes, and Forest Fires: A Century of Dendrochronology in the Southwest" will be held Thursday, April 14, from 8:15 a.m. to noon in the Kiva room.
The first director of UA's Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, Andrew Ellicott Douglass, helped organize SWARM as a regional division of AAAS. Thomas Swetnam, current director of UA's tree-ring lab, said, "Given Douglass' role in SWARM, and in establishing the tree-ring lab, we thought it was fitting that we organize a symposium for this year's meeting in Tucson that highlights some of the remarkable applications and achievements of dendrochronology, especially in the Southwest."
The symposium, "Metabolic Syndrome: Diabetes and Obesity Connections," which will feature speakers from both the United States and Mexico, will be held Friday, April 15, from 1:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Rincon room. The symposium is available for continuing education credit for nurses and dieticians.
Bert Holldobler, a noted entomologist from the University of Wuerzburg and Arizona State University, will deliver the John Wesley Powell Memorial Lecture, titled "Multicomponent Signals in Ant Communication ," Friday, April 15, at 8 p.m. in the South Ballroom.
A free, hands-on science activities fair will be held at the UA's Flandrau Science Center on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in conjunction with the conference.

UA's BIO5 Institute, the UA colleges of Medicine, Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Physiological Sciences, the Nutritional Sciences Graduate Program and the Centro de Investigacion en Alimentacion y Desarrollo are sponsoring the metabolic syndrome symposium.
The SWARM Division of AAAS holds annual meetings for its affiliated societies in the SWARM geographic region as well as its 14,000 members. These meetings offer contributed paper sessions and symposia, field trips, public lectures, social events and student presentations.
Registration fees are kept low to encourage the public to attend. Fees for the 2005 SWARM meeting are: regular $50, student $25, K-12 teacher $20 and K-12 student $10.
