NYU Child Study Center presents third Annual Adam Katz Memorial Lecture series
Goal of series is to educate the public about learning disabilities and ADHD
New York, NY (May 17, 2005) – The New York University Child Study Center is pleased to announce the Third Annual Adam Katz Lecture Series, which includes two lectures on Thursday, May 19 and Friday, May 20, 2005. The series focuses on learning difficulties and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The Adam Katz Memorial Series was created in 2003 as a tribute to the life of Adam Katz, son of Child Study Center board member Howard Katz, who suffered from ADHD and learning difficulties throughout his life. The goal of the series is to help educate the public on these mental disorders in children and adolescents, which although common are very treatable.
Each year the NYU Child Study Center invites nationally renowned experts in the field to present at the Adam Katz Lecture Series which includes a Thursday evening lecture and a Friday Grand Rounds lecture. Speakers also meet with the faculty and trainees from the Center and the departments of psychiatry, neuroscience, pediatrics, as well as the NYU School of Education and School of Social Work. These meetings allow researchers to discuss the latest science about these disorders and potential treatment options. Both lectures are open to the public as well as educators in the tri-state area including learning specialists from independent, parochial, and public schools.
It has been estimated that from 10 to 30% of children have learning difficulties. Ten to 25% of individuals with Learning Disorders have associated problems such as Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, or ADHD. Left untreated these disorders can rob children of their childhood, but with early diagnosis and proper treatment children can lead successful lives both academically and socially.
Speakers for this year's lecture series include Barbara Corcoran and Rosemary Tannock, Ph.D. Barbara Corcoran, Founder and Chairman of The Corcoran Group will present "The Possibilities Within a Disability." Ms. Corcoran will discuss her success with overcoming dyslexia and building a multi-million dollar empire. The lecture will take place on Thursday, May 19, 2005 from 5:00-6:00pm at the NYU School of Medicine, 550 First Avenue in Schwartz Lecture Hall E.
On Friday, May 20, 2005, Rosemary Tannock, Ph.D. from the University of Columbia will present "Should Cognitive Deficit Be Included as a Diagnostic Criterion for ADHD?" This lecture will explore the scientific aspects and current research of learning disorders and ADHD and will take place from 11:00am-12:15pm at the NYU School of Medicine in Auditorium Alumni A.
