ACPM to host web-based conference on adolescent drug use
Washington, D.C. – The American College of Preventive Medicine (www.acpm.org) will host a web-based conference to discuss the significant and rapidly-changing public health problem of adolescent illicit drug use. Current Trends in Drug Use Among Adolescents: Strategies for Prevention and Treatment, developed under a cooperative agreement with the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau, will be held September 28, 2005, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. ET at Medscape (www.medscape.com) from WebMD. Continuing medical education (CME/CE) credit can be obtained for participation in this conference.
Two leading specialists on the prevention and treatment of illicit drug use, Dr. Marc Fishman, Medical Director of Mountain Manor Treatment Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and Dr. Amy Khan, an Addiction Medicine Physician and Public Health Consultant from Reno, Nevada, will deliver presentations and answer audience questions. George Lundberg, Editor-in-Chief of Medscape General Medicine, will moderate the session. This free educational session will provide critical information for practicing physicians, public health officials, and other front-line health providers who provide primary care and addiction treatment services to adolescents.
The conference will feature an overview of the epidemiology of drug use, including identifying trends and patterns of increased use, the risks associated with drug use, and current preventive and treatment strategies to help adolescents.
According to ACPM President, Neal Kohatsu, MD, MPH, FACPM, "Current research has shown that over 50% of teenagers have tried an illicit drug by the time they complete high school. Clinicians working with adolescents need to be familiar with which drugs are most problematic in the teen population, and what effective strategies are available to prevent and treat drug use."
