1. Abstracts and sessions now online
All 460 sessions and 3,151 abstracts for 2005 Joint Assembly have been posted on the AGU web site. A. Searching for Abstracts of Interest to You
The 3,151 Joint Assembly abstracts may be accessed by a search tool: http://www.agu.org/meetings/sm05/waissm05adv.html
Reporters and public information officers may search for abstracts of particular interest to them, by looking up any the following parameters on the search tool above: - Name of a scientist
- Name of an institution (e.g., university, government agency)
- Geographic location (e.g., city, state, province, or country)
- Topic (e.g., volcano, Gulf of Mexico, tsunami)
Up to three search parameters may be combined (e.g., presentations on solar storms by NASA scientists based at Goddard). Full instructions are available from the search page.
Hint: In searching for abstracts from a particular institution, it is often more effective to search by e-mail address than by the name of the institution. The latter may be written in different ways by various authors (e.g., UCLA; University of California, Los Angeles; Univ. of Cal. at Los Angeles; etc.), but all of their e-mail addresses will presumably include "ucla." The search category "Affiliation" covers both names of institutions and their locations (e.g., look for either University of Colorado or Boulder under Affiliation).
The CD-ROM and printed volume of abstracts for this meeting will be available in early May. They will be sent at that time to Press Room registrants who have requested them, while supplies last. (See Press Registration Form, below.) Copies in both formats will be available in the Press Room, as will the Program Book.
B. Finding Sessions at Joint Assembly
The names, numerical designations, dates, times, and room numbers of all 460 sessions may be seen at:
http://www.agu.org/meetings/sm05/?content=program&show=glance
By clicking on the name of a Section or Society (e.g., Atmospheric Science, North American Benthic Society), all of the relevant sessions will be displayed. Clicking on any of these sessions will open a list of its oral presentations or posters. Clicking on the name of a particular presentation will open its abstract, including name and contact information for the lead author.
Many sessions are jointly sponsored by two or more Sections. Union Sessions usually have the broadest interdisciplinary appeal.

2. Press conferences planned
We are in the early stages of organizing press conferences on some of the newsworthy scientific discoveries to be presented at Joint Assembly. Some of the topics we are looking into are listed here. (All of the sessions on these topics will be held, of course.) Updated press conference information will be provided in subsequent Media Advisories. - 26 December 2004 earthquake and tsunami: scientific observations and policy implications
- Saturn's magnetosphere: is it like Earth's or Jupiter's--or even like it was 25 years ago?
- What caused 20th century climate variability?
- The outer limits of the heliosphere: how far does the Sun's influence extend, and how do we know?
- The impact of streams and rivers on life, climate, and the economy
- The ecology and management of wetlands
- Coronal mass ejections, the most powerful drivers of the Sun-Earth system
- Climate variation in the upper atmosphere and ionosphere
- Mars Exploration Rovers: first year update
- Geophysical investigations at archaeological sites, from Mayan temples to D-Day landing beaches
- Natural gas hydrates: cause and effect of global climate change?
- The 2007 International Polar Year
- Spaceborne Precipitation Estimates: Opportunities, Challenges, and Benefits
All press conferences will take place in the Press Briefing Room, Room 326 of the Morial Convention Center.
