National Academies advisory: Feb. 15 program for African-American History Month
FREEMAN A. HRABOWSKI III, president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will give the keynote address at a National Academies program celebrating African-American History Month. His presentation will focus on the achievements of African-Americans in the field of education. The program also will include the unveiling of new additions to the Academies' portrait collection of African-Americans who have made significant contributions to science, engineering, and medicine.
THIS YEAR'S PORTRAIT HONOREES are:
- HOWARD S. JONES JR., retired engineer and scientist, and former chief of microwave research, Harry Diamond Laboratories, U.S. Army, Adelphi, Md.
- AUDREY FORBES MANLEY, retired president, Spelman College, Atlanta, and former deputy U.S. Surgeon General
- VIVIEN THEODORE THOMAS (deceased), former supervisor, Surgical Research Laboratories, Johns Hopkins University, and former instructor in surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore
