National Academies advisory: Feb. 15 program for African-American History Month

FREEMAN A. HRABOWSKI III, president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will give the keynote address at a National Academies program celebrating African-American History Month. His presentation will focus on the achievements of African-Americans in the field of education. The program also will include the unveiling of new additions to the Academies' portrait collection of African-Americans who have made significant contributions to science, engineering, and medicine.

THIS YEAR'S PORTRAIT HONOREES are:

HOWARD S. JONES JR., retired engineer and scientist, and former chief of microwave research, Harry Diamond Laboratories, U.S. Army, Adelphi, Md.
AUDREY FORBES MANLEY, retired president, Spelman College, Atlanta, and former deputy U.S. Surgeon General
VIVIEN THEODORE THOMAS (deceased), former supervisor, Surgical Research Laboratories, Johns Hopkins University, and former instructor in surgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore
