Stories of descent: Deep genealogy

WASHINGTON -- The Marian Koshland Science Museum will hold a public program on deep genealogy from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m on Thursday, July 21, 2005 with writer Steve Olson, author of MAPPING HUMAN HISTORY: GENES, RACE, AND OUR COMMON ORIGINS.

The author will trace five to ten generations to find family trees that overlap, or might overlap if better records were available. Along the way, he will talk about the connection of genealogies to health, genetics, race, and ethnicity. Please bring your family tree or other genealogical information. Event admission is $10.00.

Featuring state-of-the-art, interactive exhibits targeted to students and adults, the museum helps translate the studies conducted by the National Academies into accessible, engaging exhibits. The museum's inaugural exhibits allow visitors to glimpse the frontiers of today's scientific research; witness the potential effects of global warming; and explore how DNA analysis can help catch criminals and stop epidemics.

The museum is located at the corner of 6th & E Streets, N.W. in Washington, D.C., one block from the MCI Center and National Building Museum, three blocks from the National Mall, and one block from the Gallery Place and Judiciary Square Metrorail stations, serviced by the red, yellow, and green lines.
