National Academies advisory: Science Museum grand opening Friday, April 23

Discover D.C.'s newest museum as its doors open to the public � revealing the science driving today's headlines and affecting our lives every day. The Grand Opening will spring into action with performances by Velocity Stilts � acrobats who have adapted the latest technology used in artificial limbs into high-performance stilts. The big band sound of the Junkyard Saints will entertain as museum interns from Banneker High School engage visitors in hands-on science activities throughout the afternoon. MUSEUM ADMISSION WILL BE FREE ON OPENING DAY ONLY. General admission rates will go into effect Saturday, April 24.

WHEN: FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2004

10 a.m.: Entertainment begins
10:30 a.m.: Program begins
11 a.m.: Museum doors open to visitors
11 a.m. � 2 p.m.: Live entertainment & outdoor activities, Hands-on science activities continue
6 p.m.: Museum closes

WHERE: MARIAN KOSHLAND SCIENCE MUSEUM: Corner of 6th & E Streets, N.W.
Metro: Gallery Place or Judiciary Square

PARTICIPANTS: Civic officials, and museum and National Academies leadership. DEPUTY MAYOR ERIC PRICE is expected to attend. Others in attendance will include:

-- Dr. Bruce Alberts, president of the National Academy of Sciences
-- Dr. Daniel Koshland, founder of the Marian Koshland Science Museum and professor of biochemistry at University of California, Berkeley
-- Patrice Legro, director of the Marian Koshland Science Museum
-- Dr. Donald Kennedy, co-chair of the museum's advisory committee and Bing Professor of Environmental Science at Stanford University
-- Dr. Eugene Rasmusson, adviser to the museum's climate change exhibit and professor of meteorology at the University of Maryland
-- Dr. William Wulf, president of the National Academy of Engineering
-- Dr. Harvey Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine
-- Students from Banneker High School, Washington, D.C.
