Media advisory: Sea of Cortez expedition to launch March 26

3/24/04 Media are invited to attend the launch of the Sea of Cortez Expedition and Education Project, which will depart from Municipal Wharf II in Monterey, Calif., at 10 a.m. Friday, March 26.

Led by Stanford University biologist William Gilly, the two-month expedition will retrace a 1940 voyage by author John Steinbeck and scientist Edward Ricketts to Mexico's Gulf of California. That epic, 4,000-mile journey was immortalized in the book, Sea of Cortez, co-authored by Steinbeck and Ricketts.

Professor Gilly will be accompanied by biologist Chuck Baxter, a professor emeritus at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station; author Jon Christensen, a San Jose State University Steinbeck Fellow; and marine scientist Nancy Burnett of Sea Studios in Monterey. Skipper Frank Donahue will pilot the commercial fishing boat, Gus D, which will be docked at the end of Municipal Wharf II - a commercial fishing pier located directly east of Monterey's Old Fisherman's Wharf.
