National Nanotechnology Initiative workshop

Nanoscience Research for Energy Needs

March 9, 2004--A National Nanotechnology Initiative Interagency Workshop on Nanoscience Research for Energy Needs will be held in Crystal City, VA at the Courtyard (by Marriott) Crystal City from March 16-18, 2004. Media are invited to attend this workshop where leading scientists and engineers from government, academia and industry will exchange information, research findings and ideas toward defining opportunities and goals in energy-related research for the next decade and determining the special opportunities that the field of nanoscience affords to energy research. A draft agenda can be found at https://nnco.nano.gov/energy/.

Prior registration is necessary because of limited room capacity. Reporters should register by calling Cate Alexander at 703-292-4399 or e-mailing her at [email protected].

The workshop is sponsored by the Department of Energy and, through the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO), the other member agencies of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee, Committee on Technology, National Science and Technology Council.

This is one of a series of workshops being sponsored by the NNI member agencies to address the NNI's research priorities. For more information on the NNI and the energy-related research, please see the latest budget supplement report posted at http://www.nano.gov/nni04_budget_supplement.pdf. The section on the energy conversion and storage grand challenge begins on page 28. Printed copies of the report will be available at the workshop. One of the main purposes of this workshop is to refine the vision for this NNI grand challenge and recommend a research agenda to achieve that vision.

Established in 2001, the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) is the secretariat to the Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology Subcommittee (NSET) of the National Science and Technology Committee (NSTC). The NNCO is the point of contact on federal nanotechnology activities for government organizations, academia, industry, professional societies, foreign organizations, and others to exchange technical and programmatic information. In addition, the NNCO develops and makes available printed and other materials as directed by the NSET Subcommittee as well as maintains the National Nanotechnology Initiative Web site. The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is a federal R&D program established to coordinate the multi-agency efforts in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology.
