National Nanotechnology Initiative Workshop on Nano-electronics, -photonics, and -magnetics

February 5, 2004--A National Nanotechnology Initiative Interagency Workshop on Nano-electronics, -photonics, and -magnetics, will be held Feb. 11-13, 2004, at the Holiday Inn Arlington at Ballston, Arlington, VA.

Media are invited to attend this workshop where leading scientists and engineers from government, academia and industry will exchange information, research findings and ideas toward identifying needs and opportunities for applications of nanostructured materials and devices. A draft agenda is available.

The workshop is sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, and, through the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO), the other member agencies of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee, Committee on Technology, National Science and Technology Council.

This is one of a series of workshops being sponsored by the NNI member agencies to address the NNI's "grand challenges." For more information on the NNI and the grand challenges component of the NNI research program, please see the latest budget supplement report posted at http://www.nano.gov/nni04_budget_supplement.pdf. The section on the nano-electronics, -photonics, and -magnetics grand challenge begins on page 24. Printed copies of the report will be available at the workshop. One of the main purposes of this workshop is to refine the vision for this NNI grand challenge and recommend a research agenda to achieve that vision.

Prior registration is requested. Reporters should register by calling Cate Alexander at 703-292-4399 or e-mailing her at [email protected].

Established in 2001, the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) is the secretariat to the Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology Subcommittee (NSET) of the National Science and Technology Committee (NSTC). The NNCO is the point of contact on federal nanotechnology activities for government organizations, academia, industry, professional societies, foreign organizations, and others to exchange technical and programmatic information. In addition, the NNCO develops and makes available printed and other materials as directed by the NSET Subcommittee as well as maintains the National Nanotechnology Initiative Web site. The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is a federal R&D program established to coordinate the multi-agency efforts in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology.
