Representing clinics, hospitals, community-based organizations, city and state health departments, faith-based organizations, medical and dental schools, and other HIV/AIDS service providers, these individuals are convening at the Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC, for a four-day conference starting today.
The conference is being held to update those who provide HIV/AIDS care with funding from the Ryan White CARE Act on the latest clinical and policy issues. Topics to be discussed include the following:
Reauthorization of the Ryan White CARE Act in 2005 (the federal government's largest program specifically for people living with HIV) The recent Institute of Medicine report calling for a new national program to care for all low-income Americans with HIV/AIDS How the new Medicare prescription drug benefit, Medicare part D, will affect patients and health care providers Possible future funding changes for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program The conference is sponsored by the federal Health Services and Resources Administration and its HIV/AIDS Bureau.
Experts From the HIV Medicine Association
HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) Executive Director Christine Lubinski will make a presentation on how Medicare part D is likely to affect drug coverage for people with HIV/AIDS. Lubinski, a staunch advocate for HIV/AIDS patients and health care providers, has followed this and many other health care policy issues closely, working with federal officials and Congressional leaders to improve accessibility to care. Her presentation is scheduled for 3:30 pm on Tuesday, August 24.
