Invitation for Journalists (Exhibition Preview)

This exhibition looks at the achievements of UK Engineering and its potential for the future.
The twelve themes of the event cover every aspect of our lives from Healthcare, Transport, Manufacturing and Housing to Aerospace, Defence, the Environment and Communications. The event brings together people who are involved in all aspects of UK Engineering and are leading the way in world class research. Projects on display include:
  • The operating room of the future designed for computer assisted surgery
  • A model of the ExoRover, a vehicle designed for exploration on Mars
  • A synthetic pig that is helping improve the profitability of livestock production
  • A running track for dust mites that shows how they behave and can be controlled
  • An interactive living environment that responds to the needs of the user
  • A laboratory model of a process for converting biomass into liquid fuel
  • Portable 'lab on a chip' devices for environmental monitoring
  • A car customised to suit the driver's needs
  • Sports shoes produced by 'tool-less' manufacturing techniques
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles ( UAVs) for military reconnaissance and environmental monitoring

    The event is jointly supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Journalists are invited to a preview of the exhibition at 3pm which includes the opportunity to talk to representatives from each of the twelve themes (see below for registration details, theme outlines and how to obtain further exhibit information).

    This event is a key component of the International Review of UK Engineering Research 2004. The Review has been jointly organised by EPSRC and the Royal Academy of Engineering. The aim of the Review is to establish an independent assessment of the quality of UK engineering compared with international standards. This review is the sixth in a series undertaken by EPSRC in collaboration with the relevant subject societies.
