Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft

First DFG research conference in the USA

Young geoscientists meet at the launch of a German-American conference series

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) will be holding a conference on "Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Life – Changing Earth and its Impact on Human Habitat" from 4-6 April in Washington, D.C. This conference constitutes the start of a planned series of conferences in which the DFG will bring together outstanding young German and American researchers from different fields of science. The aim is to promote high-level interdisciplinary exchange on current scientific issues and to initiate international research cooperation.

This first conference, which will be attended by approximately 70 German and American researchers, deals with issues in Earth System Science, in particular with the effects of the changing planet on human habitats. It will focus on aspects such as climate change and global water supply as well as the consequences of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions for the biosphere. The conference will be sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Geological Institute (AGI).

The conference will take place at the AAAS Conference Center, 1200 New York Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. The complete conference programme is available at www.dfg.de.

Journalists are cordially invited to take part in the conference. There will be an opportunity for questions during the closing session on 6 April. To register, contact the DFG's Washington Office (telephone: +1 (202) 785-4206, e-mail: kpudel@dfg-usa.org).
