American Psychoanalytic Association
Psychoanalysts to convene Winter 2005 MeetingNew York, NY- The Winter 2005 Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) will be held at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel, New York City from Wednesday, January 19 through Sunday, January 23, 2005. More than 2,000 psychoanalysts, other mental health professionals, and students are expected to attend.
On Wednesday, January 19 from 9:00 a.m -10::30 a.m., there will be a "Press Briefing with Psychoanalysts on Issues of Contemporary Concern" which includes breakfast. Kerry J. Sulkowicz, chair of APsaA's Committee on Public Information, will chair the event along with several other analysts.
Of particular note is the panel that will be presented on Saturday, January 22 from 9:00 A.M. until 12:00 Noon on "Genes-Environment Interactions: Developmental and Psychotherapeutic Implications" featuring psychoanalysts Glen Gabbard, M.D. and Regina Pally, M.D.; and Stephen Suomi, Ph.D., Chief of the Laboratory of Comparative Ethology of the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD). It has long been debated whether human personality and psychology are more influenced by one's genes or by one's childhood environment. Rather than this "either-or", the panel will use new data to support the view that parents' interactions with their children, in conjunction with the child's innate genetic predisposition, serve to influence the development of the child's personality and psychopathology.
The Meeting's Scientific Program includes a number of other panels as well as symposia, presentations, and discussion groups of note. The Meeting will also feature the Fourth Annual Poster Session that will display presentations concerning conceptual and/or empirical relevance to psychoanalytic theory, technique, aspects of practice, and effectiveness of psychoanalysis.
