April ACS ProSpectives conference on counterfeit drugs planned

The ACS, the world's largest scientific society, has brought together a wide variety of experts for this meeting on "Pharmaceutical Authentication and Forensic Analysis" because the counterfeiting problem has reached a point where it can affect the safety and well being of patients, according to John Katz, ACS ProSpectives' program director.

Authenticating pharmaceuticals raw materials, active pharmaceutical ingredients, inert substances and finished dosage forms throughout the entire supply chain is essential to maintain the integrity of drugs, Katz notes. The conference, to be held at the Grand Hyatt, will provide the latest thinking on a wide spectrum of techniques designed to enhance the understanding of pharmaceutical authentication and forensic analysis.

The world's top experts from the pharmaceutical industry, government regulatory agencies and academia will discuss applications of new and existing technologies in the larger context of creating strategies to prevent and detect counterfeit pharmaceutical products. Among the companies and agencies with speakers on the meeting program are the Food and Drug Administration; Purdue Pharma LP; Merck Sharpe & Dohme; Pfizer Global Research & Development; Molecular Isotope Technologies; GlaxoSmithKline; BfArM (Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs & Medical Devices); Identif Technologies, a november AG company, and Orell Fssli Security Printing.

Chairs for the meeting are Frederick L. Fricke, Jr. - FDA; Rafik H. Bishara - Eli Lilly & Company; Moheb M. Nasr - FDA; John P. Jasper - Molecular Isotope Technologies; Thomas Zimmer - Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH.

The next meeting in the ACS ProSpectives series will be "Emerging Opportunities in Chemical and Biosensing" May 16-19 in Santa Fe, N.M., at the Inn at Loretto.

Chairs for the session are Art Janata - Georgia Institute of Technology; Antonio J. Ricco - Microtechnologies & Biosystems, NASA Ames Research Center; Boris Mizaikoff - Georgia Institute of Technology
