December 2003 From Teenage Cancer Trust Third International Conference on Cancer and the Adolescent First media alert – a date for your 2004 diaryRoyal College of Physicians, 11 St Andrews Place, London NW1 4LE Monday 1 March – Tuesday 2 March 2004 You are invited to attend the only conference in the world on cancer and the adolescent. It is organised by the Teenage Cancer Trust, the pioneering UK charity that was established to focus on the most neglected group of cancer patients – teenagers and young adults. The UK, through the Trust, is the sole country in the world to have a programme of developing specialist units for adolescents. There are now 8 and the target is at least 20 across Britain, which will give every teenager access to a dedicated unit. Other countries are now beginning to follow the UK's lead. Leading international specialists from Europe and America will present new research findings to the conference on incidence, risk, causes, treatment, supportive care and psychological effects. They will discuss and debate some of the controversial areas that impact on young patients such as body image, future fertility, the effect on families, careers…… Speakers will also include patients like paralympic gold medallist Marc Woods, who will explain what it is like to have been one of this 'Cinderella' age group and how they have fought back to lead full and active lives. Registration is free for bona fide UK and international media. You are welcome to attend all conference sessions. There will be a news briefing on the opening morning with key speakers and patients.
