June 2003 From Instituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare INFN halts the activities of the Gran Sasso Laboratories INFN (the Italian research institute for nuclear and subnuclear Physics) requests also urgent measures from the competent authorities Due to the rising doubts about the tightness of the sewers, which were presumably the cause of the sequestration of one of the underground halls of the Laboratories, the executive board of Infn has decided as a precaution to halt all activities requiring manipulation of any kind of liquid over the whole Laboratories (not only in the hall C).After taking this difficult decision, Infn President Enzo Iarocci requested a radical and urgent technical intervention to the government authorities, in order to enable the normalization of the activities of the Laboratories and to assure complete safety for the Abruzzo citizens. These measures are fundamental to avoid a final and incalculable damage to the scientific activities of Infn and of the other international institutions participating to important experiments at the Laboratories. | |
