August 2003 From Virginia Tech Wireless workshop examines trends What's new in wireless communication research, system deployment, and applications? What are the impacts and promise for business, government, public safety, and homeland security? The Center for Wireless Telecommunications (CWT) will hold its annual Wireless Opportunities Workshop (WOW) at Virginia Tech on Monday, September 15. Individuals who want to identify markets, learn about emerging technologies, and establish strategies related to wireless technologies can look forward to an information filled agenda. A pre-conference tutorial Sunday afternoon explores the technology and applications of Wi-Fi -- the establishment of wireless capable locations for laptop computers, "the hot wireless networking technology that's taking data by storm," according to CWT research professor Dennis Sweeney. He and economics professor Sheryl Ball will present the tutorial, which includes interactive demonstrations using Wi-Fi devices. Monday's workshop, beginning at 8 a.m., includes a panel discussion on "The Promise and Reality of Cognitive Radio," by Charles Bostian, Center for Wireless Telecommunications (CWT) engineering coordinator; Jeff Reed of Virginia Tech's Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group; Mike Marcus of the FCC; and Eric Maass of Motorola. Information on the staying power of Wi-Fi will be presented by Liching Sung of Virginia Tech with a global regulatory perspective; Leslie Owens of Booz, Allen Hamilton on wireless security; and Nathan Ramasarma of Bechtel Telecommunications on worldwide use. After lunch, Steve Garber of NTELOS will talk about Nomadic Broadband Wireless in Rural Virginia. There will be demonstrations of emerging technology and a poster session on frontier research related to homeland security, Bluetooth, geographic information systems, ultrawideband, and E-textiles and wearable computers. David Lee of Boeing will present regarding emerging applications for a transportable Ku-band CDMA Terminal; and Peter Karabinis of Mobile Satellite Ventures will discuss "The Future of Mobile Satellite Systems with Ancillary Terrestrial Connectivity." The program will close at 4 p.m. with remarks from CWT Director George Morgan.
